Pre-Course Tasks

We know that you will be eager to start your training and to prepare yourself as well as you can for your teacher training year in September. To this end we have put together a series of induction tasks that you can access and complete.

These tasks must be completed by the start of the programme and more details about the specific deadlines for each task will be given during our induction webinars, however, we know that some of you will want to get ahead or plan in time to complete these, so you can find these available now by clicking on either the Primary or Secondary links, depending on which programme you will be taking. Happy reading and exploring the exciting world of teaching!

Primary Tasks

Secondary Tasks

Student Finance

When applying to the Student Loans Company (SLC) for the payment of tuition fees the name of the provider you need to use is:

  • BARR BEACON SCITT
  • HEP Code: CSOI
  • UKPRN: 10053216

Please use these details for the following all subjects. Fee payments are made directly to Barr Beacon SCITT from SLC.

MAINTENANCE LOANS AND GRANTS: For further information on tuition fee loans and maintenance loans and grants to support accommodation and living costs during the training year please see the following website site www.gov.uk/teacher-training-funding.

SELF FUNDING: If you wish to self-fund all or part of your training (i.e. not take out a Student Loan to cover the Tuition Fee), you must inform Lindsey Haywood (SCITT Administrator) before you start your training. If you are a secondary trainee in a subject eligible for a bursary and you are self-funding, we will request you to complete a £0 student finance application to demonstrate your eligibility of a bursary.

WHERE TO APPLY: Please complete your Student Finance application in line with Student Finance England’s schedule. More information can be found on the following website: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance

WHEN TO APPLY: You should apply as soon as possible from March 2024 onwards.

Bursaries

Some of our secondary programmes are eligible for financial support through a bursary. The amount you can expect to receive will depend on the subject you train in, the route into teaching you are on and your degree classification, or highest relevant academic qualification.

Further information about bursaries (if applicable) is provided during course induction in September. You do not need to make a separate application for a bursary, however, you do need to complete a Student Finance application (even if you are self-funding your place).

We will collect your bank details at the start of the course and confirm the bursary payment schedule in September. In the meantime, if you require any additional information about bursaries and bursary eligibility this can be found on the Get into Teaching website HERE.

Scholarships

Certain training subjects also have scholarships to support the training of teachers in their field. Further information about which subjects offer scholarships and the application process can be found on the Get into Teaching website HERE.

FAQs

Your conditions of the offer must be completed before you start the course in September 2024. We urge you to sign up well in advance for conditions such as Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses as these often have specific times when they can be completed.

Student Finance will open in March 2024 for applications for 2024/25.

Even if you already have a DBS you will be asked to apply for a DBS in order to participate on our course. You cannot apply for a DBS if the start of the course is more than 3 months away – therefore we will communicate with trainees the process for applications nearer the start date during the pre-course induction. Please expect further information from Lindsey Haywood (SCITT Administrator).

The course officially starts on the 4th September 2024 with two school-based pre-course induction days in school beginning on the 2nd September 2024. You will therefore be required to attend from Monday 2nd September 2024. The precise calendar will be shared during the pre-course induction.

There are two pre-course induction days during July 2024 alongside our induction webinars in May/June 2024, when the key dates are shared with all of our new trainee teachers.

As an accredited provider of ITT have to view your original certificates in order to validate your GCSE and degree status and qualifications. If you do not have these on the first day of the course in September, you cannot start the course.

We must see:

English (Language) GCSE certificate
Mathematics GCSE certificate
Primary only: Science GCSE certificate
Degree certificate

If any of your certificates are not written in English, we will require a professional translation to be completed and submitted. If your qualifications are not UK qualifications, they must be equivalent to our entry requirements and this must be demonstrated by an ENIC equivalency certificate.

If you haven’t got these, you will need to contact the relevant organisation and request that certified copies of your certificates are sent out to you. There is sometimes a charge for this service. You must do this as a matter of urgency and well in advance of September.

However, we are able to exercise discretion for recent graduates where there is a delay in receiving the original certificate. In these cases, we will ask to view written confirmation from the relevant degree-awarding institution (e.g. through an academic transcript) that you have achieved graduate status. We will ask to view the original certificate as soon as it is available.

Pre-course tasks are available on this website. A short introduction will be given to these on the pre-course induction webinars, however, you can start them whenever you wish.

The first place to check is our website and this site for updates, as we list a lot of important information on there: www.bbscitt.co.uk. If this doesn’t solve your query, please get in touch with Lindsey Haywood (SCITT Administrator) LHaywood@barrbeaconschool.co.uk and one of the SCITT team will be in touch.

Please note: Many of our staff work term time only – if you require assistance out of term time hours, please contact us via e-mail and we will be in touch as soon as a member of the team is available.

Pre-Induction Checklist

  1. Read all of the information on the page so that you are fully aware of what you need to know.
  2. Complete the Personal Details form, the Statement of Medical History and the Photograph consent form.

Check the conditions of your offer and ensure that you understand how you can complete these. These must be completed and evidence of completion must be provided before you start the course in September 2024.

Supply Lindsey Haywood (LHaywood@barrbeaconschool.co.uk) with all outstanding documentation (e.g. Degree Certificates, GCSE Certificates, A-Level Certificates etc.). You will not be able to start the course if you have not provided the original document to the SCITT. If you have mislaid your original certificates, you will be required to contact the awarding institution and obtain replacement certificates. You should do this as a priority.

Supply Lindsey Haywood (LHaywood@barrbeaconschool.co.uk) with all requests that are made for ID. We sometimes require additional ID for our pre-employment checks, DBS check and right to work check.

Ensure you are keeping up-to-date with the world of teaching and your subject knowledge. Between now and the start of the course is an ideal time to read around and explore your subject and how it is taught in schools, even if you are not completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course as part of your offer.

A good place to start for Education News would be these articles and websites: The Sutton Trust’s Journal ‘What makes great teaching’ (2014) outlines some key drivers behind great teaching and the evidence to support this: https://www.suttontrust.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/What-Makes-Great-Teaching-REPORT.pdf

The EEF is an educational foundation that links educational research to classroom practice. Explore their website and the teaching and learning toolkit here: https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/

  • Read the guidance on Student Finance and complete an application once applications have opened.
  • Await further information on the completion of the Debarring Service Check (DBS). Further information will be communicated during June 2024 and it is imperative that once you have the DBS application form that this is completed as a priority.
  • Await further information on bursaries during September 2024.
